I went to see Pete Doherty's mob play on Monday at the Junction in Cambridge. Last time I was there, was back in 1999 to see Feeder. The venue was ok, but it was in a shit area. Fuck me! It's now the most modern place in East Anglia! Around the venue they've stuck up loads of modern buildings with glass windows all over the place and mulit-national franchises as far as the eye could see. Impressed.
I was a bit concerned to see me and my brother were about the oldest people queuing up to go in. It was about -4 degrees C outside, and I had just a short sleeve shirt on, so I was more concerned about my impending pneumonia than the jail-bait around us. But anyway, 40 minutes of freezing my balls off, I'm inside. There were 2 support acts - one utter shit, the other pretty damn good; then there was a glass thrown at my head, giving me a cut above the eye (fortunately it was only a hard plastic glass and not a proper glass one or I'd have been needing stitches - and so would the ("Crivvens!" - Admin-o-matic Machine) who threw the glass at me) and finally at 10.50pm, after many boos and cries of 'cunt', Pete and his band appeared. It's a weird feeling - he's a bit of a nob-head, yet a legend. And a showman. Like the chap or hate him, it's hard not to raise a smile and be enchanted when the hardcore Doherty faithful around you shout and jump around as soon as his scruffy-self appeared.
The set was ok, I'm not a big Babyshambles fan, but a few songs really got the crowd going. Unfortunately I was completely knackered after a couple of late nights in a row, and I couldn't get right into the gig, but when Killamangiro and Fuck Forever were belted out at the end, I was gobsmacked. Fucking hell, it was like hero worship out there. Nearly the entire venue coming alive for the signature tunes of a band - and a man - they all love despite him being in the papers repeatedly for being a bit of a drunken/drug addicted twat.
It wasn't the greatest gig of all time, but it's been good to see a man at perhaps the peak of his fame play live - before the law finally puts him in prison for good!
Anyone seen the band or like them?
