I went to see Tina Dico play at the Norwich Arts Centre last night. A small venue, probably usually home to pompous performing art student types. With only about 120-150 people there, the audience wasn't great in number, so it's a fair bit different to what I'm used to: rock gigs with several hundred beer drenched young people jumping up and down and elbowing each other for fun. But in all honesty, I think the simple acoustic performance of one talented (and good looking) lady playing her guitar probably topped all the gigs I've been to in the past. Not that I've been to a great many to be fair.
There is something about the intensity of a solo performance that relies on no gimmicks such as lighting effects, loud bass, backing performers et al, not to mention the fact that you can hear every word being sung, that is strangely highly captivating. I think Tina's charisma helped somewhat though, I could quite imagine myself being bored shitless listening to some other singers whine on up there on stage. But anyway, what a terrific night. Only problem was getting home - my last train was due before the end of Tina's set. Eventually after wasting more money on a non-existant train, I got a lift home.
As the title of the topic says, however, a gig like this was a refreshing change. Two years ago, I'd never have considered going at all. But how things change. Perhaps it's maturity kicking in, or I'm just mellowing out in my old age. It's all good though!
