The Beech Fagus sylvaticaBeech trees can reach 40m in height and have widely spreading branches. The oval leaves have veins protruding from the edges. The leaves start out yellow-green and turn shiny dark green later in the season. The rich brown leaves of autumn often remain on beech in hedges into the winter. Beech trunks have smooth, silver bark. The mast is a case of four sections which falls from the tree in autumn and opens to allow the seed inside to germinate. Beech seedlings can often be found in large numbers in a beech woodland during the spring. Native to southern England.

What a wonderful display of nature's beauty.
Everyone should love a good Beech tree.
Tell me, have you tried to uproot one and plant it in your house Wedge?

The land lady didn't approve, and hence our forthcoming eviction.
I think next time I shall stick to a smaller shrub.

Oohh, me loves trees. I have quite a few photographic examples I've taken of weird and wonderful trees so I'll be back with pictures of trees at some point (2006?). For now, marvel at my image in the artwork section of www.holeinmyhead.co.uk - that which shows two golden trees and is entitled "Gates of Lothlorien." Also marvel at the strange tree in the sunset on my Photography page.
