Do you lot actually buy singles? They just seem like a complete con. £2+ for 3 tracks, 2 of which are probably rubbish. Obviously some people still buy singles as enough of them are sold. I can't remember the last single I bought. It was probably naff though.

Not often, unless it's a song I really, really like, and if the album it is on is poo.

See that's the weird thing about local record stores as opposed to their big, chain store counterparts. When a CD doesn't sell well or it's old, they generally sell it at a bargain price - but HMV et al seem to prefer hiking up the price. I remember for about a year seeing Stereoworld on sale in my HMV for £4.99, 3 years after it's release when Feeder were still relatively unknowns.
The only time the big stores seem to reduce their prices is in those rare sales they have. The money grabbing bastards. Economies of Scale obviously have no effect when it comes to record stores.
My main quarrel with singles is the multi-format thing. Ever since Blur beat Oasis to the top of the charts by releasing their single on 2 CDs, everyone's been doing it. All it means is the punter gets ripped off. Bung on a few inferior live tracks or b-sides and people like Becca go into obsessive fan mode and feel the need to buy everything. It's cheating the charts too - we all know many bands including Feeder would never chart high if they didn't release 2 CDs and vinyl, cassettes.

but is it not true that you have to buy them seperately for it to count towards the chart more than once?

I doubt it, and besides - if you were to buy one CD from one outlet and the other from another, then who would know you bought both? Fact: multi-format singles sell more than single format ones, thus it distorts the charts. More so with rock bands I'd imagine. Their fans are amongst the most loyal and are more likely to buy all formats than some casual teeny bopper who buys the latest West Life CD.
