Once upon a time, Metallica were my favourite band. The first band I really ever got into. But after the mostly crap 'Re-Load', and the even more mostly crap, 'Garage Inc.' I lost a lot of interest in them. Then along came that song from the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack. Bloody awful, just like the film. And then, a couple of years later comes St. Anger, also known as St. Shite, a song with some great 'retro' sounding riffs, spoilt by the worst nu-metal influenced drumming (sounds like someone repeatedly kicking a garage can) and a godawful chorus and vocals. And now, just when you think Metallica couldn't get any worse, their latest single is even worse. What a pile of bollocks. It's James Hetfield which really ruins things on the song, his voice sounds atrocious, worse than it originally did back in the 'Kill 'em All' days of teenage wailing.
It's quite saddening to listen to Metallica now. I liken it to watching some 45 year old former boxing champ trying to relive his former glory by getting back into the ring, only to get his arse kicked by a younger and fitter generation of fighter, therefore crushing his reputation in one unnecessary go. Metallica were once kings of the metal world, but right now, they're not even fit to be the court jesters.
Does anyone find their latest stuff in the least bit interesting? Anyone got a good word to say about them at all?
