80's movies were great (and at the same time) crap. Perhaps the last decade of movie making that didn't have to adhere to strict 'How to Make a Hollywood Blockbuster' guidelines all the bloody time.
Some of the best 80s movies that spring to my mind at this late/early hour....
Ghostbusters - I love it. Great effects for the time, and funny.
The Star Wars sequels - They weren't crap back then. They looked a lot more realistic in places than that atrocious cgi stuff George produces now.
Back to the Future - never gets boring. Was the first movie I ever saw in a cinema too.
Aliens - One of the last great action movie blockbusters that wasn't a load of predictable, over the top crap. Aliens Resurrection springs to mind.
Terminator - It was BRILLIANT. Actually I didn't see it until about '93 so I shouldn't have include that.
Tron - original, weird, but cool.
Eighties sci-fi in general was brilliant. Same with the seventies. Odd plots, strange sets, and truly bizarre endings. Great.

I have to admit... I haven't seen many 80s movies. But I loved Back to the Future. And Star Wars. I still think the special effects are pretty good. I reckon that with the speed that the computer graphics are advancing that soon there will be no need for actors. Any thoughts?? Actually, I wouldn't hope for any from you lot...

Movie directors and studios are stupid, stupid people. Just because they have some technology, they think they HAVE to use it. Throw in some wire-fighting scenes, add some computer graphics, and some more computer graphics.... then some more fighting on wires ....and some slow-motion/freeze frame rotating shots..... yawn, it's like a pantomine.
Unfortunately, these cretins fail to realise their technology is crap. Everything looks so fake.
Take Star Wars. Originally, they used simple sets and people with suits on. So they don't look wholly convincing, but, they look organic. Watch the re-mastered original Star Wars movies, or any of the newer ones - everything looks so fake and unrealistic. WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT OF THAT?
I think one of the best examples of where technology has messed things up is the Aliens movies. The original is a masterpiece in horror movie making. Tense, 'believable' and with a scary foe. You hardly get to see the alien: but that makes it so damned good. A couple of times it looks crap (it's a man in a rubber suit) but mostly it's brilliant. Aliens improves things further with it's robotics and excellent action and strong characters. Then Alien 3 resorts to awful CGI graphics. The Alien looks unrealistic. Alien Resurrection completely and utterly destroys any belief in the alien further. The CGI battles are utterly unbelievable, and utterly shite, and it's turned into a camp farce.
Star Wars Episode III is going to be one big computer animation for children.
You don't need computer graphics to make a good movie - I wish directors and studios would take notice. If you can't make something look realistic and believable, leave it out, resort to something simpler. I'm fed up with seeing crap computer animated cartoons.
-------
By the way - Spies Like Us. Chevy Chase and Dan Akyrod. Moderately funny.
