Last RE game I played was Codename: Veronica on the PS2, and before that it was RE2 on the PS1. I really loved those games, and was thinking about getting another one.
However, when I read the Amazon review for RE4 it says they have got rid of the puzzle element of the game (I liked the puzzles) and turned it into more of a shoot-em-up.
I don't like the sound of this - has any one played it?

I've played it. I was never really into the RE games...but RE4 is pretty good.
However, I prefer Silent Hill to RE.

Silent Hill poos on RE, but on saying that, I prefer the format of the first 3 to that of SH: The Room.

Codename Veronica was a load of shit. Outdated, poor and predictable horror fare with awful camera angles. However, RE4 is the bollocks! Much, much better camera angles, better action, better horror and still the odd puzzle or too. Still has shitty storyline though and characters with hair that's just come out of a salon. I loved SH2, but I think RE4 is better overall, albeit slightly less psychological horror.
Another cool thing in RE4 is being able to upgrade your guns when you stumble upon a trader. Ok so it ruins the atmosphere a bit having some chaps standing in dark caverns waiting around on the off chance that someone comes along that just so happens to have some money and needs a gun, but you can choose to stick with your crappy shotgun, or swap it for a bloody massive one etc. Also there's some neat bonus modes where you have to keep killing unlimited baddies to boost your time, and when the time runs out, it's game over. On one level there's a couple of giant chaps with dual chainsaws that mercilessly stalk you all over the level. You run up ladders, swing down ropes, run through room after room, only to turn around and one of the fuckers is behind you and chops you in half before you can scream! This is on the Gamecube though. I'm not sure how the PS2 version compares.

Last I heard that was based on SH1, but with a female lead?

And Sean Bean as the main male character I think.
SHARPE IN SILENT HILL?
What's that about?
